What is a Global Talent visa

The Global Talent visa provides the opportunity for individuals who are leaders or potential leaders in their field such as researchers, scientists, innovators, dancers, singers, actors, authors etc, to come and work in the UK, in most cases without the need of a job offer.

As a more flexible immigration option than other UK work visas, it does not require sponsorship by an employer and does not place restrictions on the type of work you can do within your field.

Professionals will be able to apply from fields including:

  • science
  • medicine
  • engineering
  • humanities
  • combined arts, dance, literature, music, theatre or visual arts
  • architecture
  • fashion design
  • film and television, including animation, post production and visual effects
  • digital technology

General requirements

In order to qualify for a Global Talent visa, you will need to satisfy UK Visas and Immigration that you meet the following requirements:

  • You are at least 18 years old;
  • You have been issued with an endorsement letter by a Home Office approved endorsing body or have been awarded a  Prestigious Prizes;
  • Your application does not fall under the general grounds for refusal;
  • You have provided a valid TB certificate, if required.

The exact requirements you will need to satisfy may vary depending on your circumstances. You may want to speak to an immigration specialist for expert advice.

Endorsing bodies and eligible rewards

The application process is usually two-staged; Stage 1, applying for an endorsement; Stage 2, applying for the visa.

Depending on the exact field you are working in, you will need to apply to the relevant UK endorsing body for their endorsement. For example, if you are working in the film industry, you will need to apply to the Producers' Alliance for Cinema and Television (PACT). If you are working in the digital technology world, your application will be reviewed by Tech Nation.

Alternatively, if you have won a qualifying Prestigious Prizes in your field, you might be able to fast-track your application without having to receive an endorsement from a relevant body. This will allow you to proceed with the visa application directly.

How long can you stay in the UK

You can apply to stay in the UK for between 1 and 5 years. At the end of your visa, you can apply to extend your stay for up to 5 years again. There is currently no limit on the number of extensions you can apply for.

If you are accepted as a talented individual, you may be eligible for settlement after 3 years. If you are considered a promising talent, you may be eligible for settlement after 5 years.

When you apply for extension or settlement, you must still have the valid endorsement from the endorsing body (i.e. it has not been withdrawn), and must have earned money in the UK as a result of your work in your field of expertise.

Dependants

Your family members (spouse/partner and any children under 18) can come with you. They will need to apply for a Dependant visa and if successful, will be granted a visa in line with yours.

Processing time and application fees

For applications made from outside of the UK, the application will usually be processed within 3 weeks. For applications made from within the UK, the application will usually be processed within 8 weeks.

Priority service may be available for in-country applications and entry clearance applications made from certain countries, subject to availability and an additional priority fee.

The current visa application fee for standard service is £623. Applicants will also need to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge as part of the application, set at £624 per year (or £470 per year for Student / Youth Mobility Scheme / applicant under 18).
